Shillong: Endurance walker Welkin Stone Shadap kicked off a 150-km trek across Mawlai on Friday to warn students about drug abuse. The campaign, titled Walking With Purpose, forces a shift from district-wide walks to direct classroom engagement. Welkin Walks organized the event alongside the DREAM Mission and the state Social Welfare Department.
The team started at Lum Mawnei. They visited Seven Huts Secondary School and Sun Rays Higher Secondary School on day one. Sessions focus on the dangers of addiction and choosing a healthy life. The walkers intend to cover 50 km every day for the next three days.
Shadap plans to expand the route by coordinating with additional schools. Philwansha Jana, a teacher at Sun Rays Higher Secondary School, praised the initiative for reinforcing lessons taught by parents and educators. She said, "Hearing from youth leaders helps students better understand the consequences of substance abuse and reinforces the message to stay away from harmful habits."
