Guwahati: Authorities in Assam have arrested eight government officials for their alleged roles in a major financial scandal involving the Assam Fishery Development Corporation Ltd. The arrests follow a 2023 investigation into the misappropriation of public funds, which led officials to conduct search operations across several locations including Guwahati, Nalbari, Dhubri, and Nagaon.
Among those taken into custody are two Assam Civil Services officers, Anuradha Adhikary Sarma and Naren Chandra Basumatary. Both individuals previously served as managing directors of the fishery corporation, and Basumatary currently holds the position of Joint Secretary in the Revenue and Disaster Management Department. Other high-ranking staff caught in the sweep include former executive engineers Jyotish Saikia and Birinchi Adhikary.
The operation also resulted in the arrest of four former corporation employees, identified as Jyoti Prasad Saikia, Saburuddin Ahmed, Bhogirath Das, and Rabindra Narayan Deka. Officials from the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption confirmed that the investigation remains active as they pursue further leads. This crackdown follows the recent arrest of another ACS officer in a separate corruption matter where investigators seized significant amounts of cash and fixed deposits.
