Shillong: East Khasi Hills officials are clearing the roads. The Deputy Commissioner ordered all illegal eateries and dhabas along the National Highway to pack up. These businesses sit inside the Right of Way between 3rd Mile and 7th Mile. Owners have exactly 15 days to pull down their structures.
Failure to act brings the bulldozers. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited and the Public Works Department will tear down any remaining shacks after the deadline passes. The June 30 directive stems directly from a Supreme Court mandate regarding road safety. The court ruled that "the construction and operation of any new dhaba, eatery or commercial structure within the ROW of national highways" is prohibited. Officials are enforcing this strict ban to clear the route.
