Kohima: The Centre for Development Initiatives celebrated International Domestic Workers Day in Kohima on June 16. Held at the CAN Building in D Block, the event drew 154 participants to focus on the theme of recognizing domestic workers through rights, dignity, and decent work for all.
Resource speaker Lanueinla Imchen from the Women Helpline 181, Nagaland, educated attendees on their constitutional and legal protections. She addressed critical issues including verbal and sexual abuse, workplace exploitation, and the right to privacy. Imchen urged the workers to stay informed about their legal standing and to seek formal assistance if their rights are violated.
During the session, Call Operator Peteu explained various government schemes designed for women's safety and empowerment. She encouraged the domestic workers to utilize the Women Helpline 181 services when necessary. Domestic worker Usha Achumi also took the floor to share her personal experiences and the daily challenges she faces in her profession.
The event concluded with a call for stronger collective efforts to foster safer and more inclusive work environments. Organizers emphasized that the primary goal remains ensuring that all domestic workers are treated with the respect and fairness they deserve. As the press release noted, the program was dedicated to "Recognising Domestic Workers: Rights, Dignity and Decent Work for All."
