Kohima: Dimapur marked the 10th anniversary of the Pradhan Mantri Surakshit Matritva Abhiyan (PMSMA) on June 9. The district participated in the nationwide commemoration by providing specialized antenatal care services across all health units under the Office of the Chief Medical Officer.
Launched in 2016, the government initiative provides comprehensive health checkups on the 9th of every month to improve maternal and infant safety. Dr. Rongsennungla, the District Programme Officer for RCH/UIP, invited all pregnant women to visit local Primary Health Centres, Community Health Centres, or the District Hospital to access these free services.
The health facilities offer essential laboratory screenings and supplements to support healthy pregnancies. "At District Hospital Dimapur, pregnant women are provided free laboratory tests including VDRL, blood grouping, Hb%, HIV, HCV, HBV, urine test for sugar and protein and ESR," she explained. Patients also receive free access to IFA tablets, calcium, and Vitamin D.
Beyond clinical testing, the program offers guidance on nutrition, institutional delivery, and birth preparedness. Healthcare workers place a high priority on identifying and managing high-risk pregnancies to prevent complications. Dr. Rongsennungla encouraged ASHA workers, ANMs, and local leaders to continue mobilizing expectant mothers, especially those who have missed previous routine checkups, to ensure they utilize the monthly services.
