Guwahati: Bus owners in Dibrugarh are fighting back. They accuse the operator of the Murulidhar Jalan Bus Stand of milking drivers for extra cash. The terminal, located at the MGBT bus stand on Convoy Road in Vairagimath, became the primary hub after officials banned passenger vehicles from town to clear space for the Amolapatty flyover. It now serves both private buses and the Assam State Transport Corporation.
Municipal rules cap daily fees between Rs 50 and Rs 80 per vehicle. Drivers claim the lessee is grabbing an extra Rs 100 on top of the legal rate. With roughly 200 to 250 buses passing through daily, the illicit haul adds up fast. Owners allege the lessee even prints his own unauthorized receipts to bypass official price structures.
Tensions remain high. Bus associations reportedly collude with the lessee to squeeze money from state-run ASTC vehicles. Frustrated owners sent formal written complaints to the municipal corporation, but the response has been slow. While banners now claim an investigation is underway, the status of that probe remains murky. As one frustrated owner noted, "the municipal corporation has put up banners stating that an investigation is underway, but no further action has been taken so far." Authorities have yet to step in or enforce the fee caps.
