Guwahati: Dhubri Police hauled in Sahad Ali Sheikh on the night of September 30. Sheikh lived near Boro Masjid in Dhubri town. Officers suspect he managed illicit financial transfers and cattle smuggling operations along the India-Bangladesh border.
The arrest followed a tip from Abul Chand. Police picked up Chand on September 10 at Jhagrarpar Part-IV. Chand told investigators about a wider network. His confession led to the arrest of 11 suspected operators. Police scrutinized a seized mobile phone during the probe. They found records of unauthorized money transfers, WhatsApp chats, and phone numbers based in Bangladesh.
Authorities registered Case No. 358/2026. The charges cite Sections 61(2), 148, 112(2), 318(2), 328 and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. They also included Section 13(1) of the Assam Cattle Preservation Act, 2021, and sections of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. Investigators are now putting Sheikh through custodial interrogation. They need to map his illicit fund transfers and find his partners.
The police confirmed the status of the legal proceedings, noting: "The allegations against the accused are yet to be established through the legal process."
