Imphal: A Central Reserve Police Force constable died by suicide on August 5 at a training camp in Manipur. Vineet Singh, a resident of Purvabajirao village in the Hardoi district of Uttar Pradesh, ended his life while undergoing pre-induction training. He was attached to the F/112 Battalion and working with C/122 Company at the Motbung camp in Kangpokpi district.
Police report the incident occurred around 8 am. Singh allegedly shot himself under the chin with his issued INSAS service rifle. Sapermeina Police arrived at the camp to initiate legal proceedings. Officials have registered an unnatural death case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. The body is currently undergoing a post-mortem examination. Investigators are working to determine the motive behind the act, stating that the "motive behind the incident is yet to be established."
Manipur remains a powder keg. Over 300 companies of Central Armed Police Forces currently operate across the state to manage ongoing ethnic unrest that began on May 3, 2023. These deployments include 206 CRPF companies, 100 BSF companies, 21 Assam Rifles units, six SSB companies, and five ITBP companies. Elite CoBRA units arrived in June to bolster counter-insurgency efforts and clear illegal bunkers. More than 260 people have died and 60,000 residents are displaced since the violence ignited between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities.
