Imphal: A Central Reserve Police Force constable died by suicide at a camp in Manipur. The incident occurred at the Motbung base in Kangpokpi district on August 5. Vineet Singh was the man who died. He lived in Purvabajirao village, Hardoi, Uttar Pradesh. Singh belonged to the F/112 Battalion. He was currently going through pre-induction training with the C/122 Company.
The shooting happened at 8 am. Officials report the constable used his issued INSAS service rifle to shoot himself under the chin inside the camp. Sapermeina Police registered an unnatural death case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. Authorities sent the body for legal formalities. Investigators are now working to determine why this happened. The motive remains unknown. Officials stated: "The motive behind the incident is yet to be established."
Manipur currently hosts more than 300 companies of Central Armed Police Forces. These units maintain order amid ongoing ethnic unrest. The deployment includes 206 CRPF companies and 100 BSF units. The Army, Assam Rifles, SSB, ITBP, and state police also operate in the region. Elite CoBRA commandos arrived in June to boost counter-insurgency efforts.
Violence between Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups has gripped the state since May 3, 2023. Tensions recently spiked between Kuki-Zo and Tangkhul Naga groups in Ukhrul. The conflict has caused about 260 deaths. Over 60,000 people have fled their homes.
