Shillong: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma officially inaugurated the relocated 41 Meghalaya Battalion NCC at Cherangre in Tura on May 19. Describing the establishment of the unit as a dream come true, the Chief Minister emphasized the role of the National Cadet Corps in fostering discipline, patriotism, and character among the youth. The ceremony included a formal Guard of Honour, a ribbon cutting, a commemorative plaque unveiling, and cultural performances, alongside interactions with current and former cadets.

During his address, Sangma reflected on his own childhood aspirations to serve in the armed forces, noting that the values instilled by such organizations are essential for creating responsible future leaders. He highlighted that with nearly 75 percent of Meghalaya's population under the age of 35, the government remains deeply committed to youth empowerment. This vision is supported by the new Youth and Sports Policy, which integrates education, entrepreneurship, and skill development into a cohesive framework.

The 41 Meghalaya Battalion NCC traces its history back to the 15 Assam Artillery Battery formed in 1961, eventually becoming a battalion in October 2020. The unit was moved from Shillong to Tura on March 3 to improve operational reach across the five districts of the Garo Hills. Under the Border Area Expansion Plan, the battalion has significantly increased its presence from nine institutions to 25, now supporting approximately 2,400 enrolled cadets. Sangma reaffirmed his government's pledge to provide ongoing support for the complex's infrastructure, positioning the state for continued growth.
