COCOMI Demands Military Action Against Militants During Manipur Protests

Imphal: The Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has intensified its criticism of the central government, demanding an immediate military crackdown on Kuki militant groups. During a large-scale sit-in protest at Yaingangpokpi Bazar in the Imphal East district, organizers alleged that Manipur is suffering through a proxy war that the state has been left to face alone.

COCOMI Co-Convenor Yumkhaibam Surjitkumar claimed that the rule of law has failed in the hill areas, accusing central security forces of remaining passive during recent violence. He expressed frustration that despite the people of Manipur supporting India, the government has failed to provide necessary protection for the state. Along with fellow speakers, he emphasized the vital role of local women in defending their communities and called for unity among all indigenous hill and valley groups.

The organization reiterated three core demands during the gathering: an end to the perceived proxy war, a military offensive against militant factions, and a formal response from the Manipur government to seven questions previously submitted by the public. The protest was presided over by Yaingangpokpi Village Authority President Yelangbam Syamkeso, with support from various local groups including the Paorabi Nupi Lamjing Lup, which hosted a parallel demonstration.
