Guwahati: Pranab Bharali’s feature film Chupa Chupi hit Assamese cinemas on June 12. It follows the 2024 web series of the same name. The movie pulled in 3.25 crore during its opening week. The box office run remains steady. It holds screens until the July 3 release of Koka Deuta Nati Aru Hati 2.
The film picks up the lives of Deepak, Roop, Sanu, and Bogo. While the original series focused on rural life and the communication revolution, this sequel loses its way. The story wanders aimlessly. It sacrifices character depth for an overstuffed social agenda. The plot pivots between horror, comedy, and romance without finding a balance.
The script suffers from clunky writing and logic gaps. New character Billu, played by Kamal Lochan, dominates the screen time. His motivations remain a mystery. Other characters like Sangita shift positions with no narrative reason. The film ignores its own internal rules, particularly regarding the geography of the village and police restrictions.
Jintu Kumar Kashyap and Snigdha Gogoi provide the film’s best moments. They portray grief and loneliness with genuine care. Beyond these performances, the movie falters. Comparing the two projects, one critic noted, "Bidurbhai (2024) ran, while Chupa Chupi (2026) merely walked."
Controversy drove the commercial result. The Hah Khabo promotional campaign sparked interest across Assam. The film expanded to Hyderabad, Bengaluru, and Mumbai after its initial run. Despite technical production value that beats most local rivals, the story fails to justify its scale.
