Chiru Groups Urge Calm Following Bishnupur Shooting Incident

Imphal: Chiru civil society organisations are calling for public restraint following a shooting involving two Chiru youths in Bishnupur district. Representatives from multiple groups, including the Chiru Union and local village leaders, met to stress that the incident is a strictly criminal matter. They explicitly warned against framing the event as a conflict between the Meitei and Naga communities.

Attendees at the joint meeting expressed deep concern regarding the spread of inflammatory content and unverified reports on social media. They urged citizens to ignore rumors that could threaten the ongoing harmony between local groups. Bishnupur Police have already apprehended the accused, and officials are working to ensure order remains intact.

Rongmei Naga Council Customary Chairman Rungeisin Thaimei emphasized the need for unity during this time. He stated, "The accused person has already been arrested by Bishnupur Police and that efforts are being made by all concerned to maintain peace and normalcy." BAAL Bishnupur General Secretary Takhellambam Bikram echoed this sentiment, cautioning that any attempt to exploit the shooting for communal gain undermines peaceful coexistence.
