Kohima: A 50-day craft program kicked off in Pukhato Village on September 28. It targets cane and bamboo skills. The Guru Shishya Hastshilp Prashikshan Programme hosts 30 local artisans for the session. Training runs through November 24.
The Ministry of Textiles sponsors the project under the National Handicrafts Development Programme. The Nagaland Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd manages the operation. Itoka Sumi, the Deputy General Manager at the corporation, spoke at the launch. He told the crowd, "Make full use of the programme to improve your craft standards, explore market opportunities and contribute to Nagaland's handicraft heritage."
Students learn from an empanelled Master Craftsperson. They get raw materials and tools for the job. Workers also collect a daily stipend. Officials from the Handicrafts Service Centre will monitor the floor. They ensure strict quality standards throughout the course.

The training is officially categorized under the Skill Development in Handicraft Sector program. It operates out of Niuland district, specifically targeting the update of modern techniques for local artisans.
Itoka Sumi holds the title of Deputy General Manager (Project) for the Nagaland Handloom and Handicrafts Development Corporation Ltd. The 2026 launch date was also confirmed for the initiative.
