Guwahati: Bongaigaon police hauled in three suspects today for running a massive SIM card fraud racket. The group allegedly stole identities to activate burner accounts for cybercriminals. Detectives caught the trio after a long investigation into illicit activity across the region.
Officers identified the detained men as Ahmed Ali from Barpathargaon, Giyas Uddin Ahmed from Bartalowa village, and Dipen Chandra Roy from Deuripara. These men reportedly harvested personal documents to register SIM cards without the victims knowing. They then peddled the active lines to crooks.
The haul was significant. Police seized 134 SIM cards during the raid. They also took 39 Aadhaar cards, 13 voter ID cards, 11 PAN cards, three e-Shram cards, three Ayushman cards, two ATM cards, and two COVID-19 vaccination cards. The sheer volume of sensitive paperwork suggests a sophisticated operation that likely victimized many unsuspecting locals.
Investigators are now digging into how the group obtained these documents and where they moved the cards. Authorities stated: "Bongaigaon Police have launched a detailed investigation to ascertain the full extent of the alleged racket, identify other persons involved and determine how the identity documents and SIM cards were being procured and distributed." The probe remains active as police hunt for potential co-conspirators.
