Gangtok: The BJP central leadership named Darjeeling MP Raju Bista to lead its Sikkim operations. This is not a routine reshuffle. It is a calculated gamble aimed at next year's Panchayat elections. The party aims to establish a firm foothold in a state currently dominated by the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha, or SKM.
Bista hails from West Bengal, not Sikkim. This makes the appointment unconventional. Yet, the leadership sees his background as an asset. He understands the political fractures of the Hills. His work mirrors the specific needs of the state. Most notably, Bista is well-versed in the fight for Scheduled Tribe status for various regional communities.
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang has spent years demanding this status for 12 communities: Bhujel, Gurung, Jogi, Kirat Khambu Rai, Kirat Dewan, Khas, Mangar, Newar, Sanyasi, Sunuwar, Thami, and Majhi. Darjeeling has pursued an almost identical campaign for 11 Gorkha sub-tribes. Bista has lobbied for these groups in Parliament repeatedly.
The move creates a delicate political dynamic. Bista could act as a bridge, helping the SKM deliver on a long-standing promise to their voters. Or, he could position the BJP as a distinct alternative to the ruling government. As one political observer noted, the appointment is a "calculated bet" that carries significant weight. Time will show if Bista strengthens the SKM or forces them into a defensive corner.
