Author Som Kamei Invited by University of Oxford's Pitt Rivers Museum to Speak on Freedom Fighter Rani Gaidinliu

Imphal: Som Kamei, Author and a scholar of the history of India's Northeast, has been invited by the University of Oxford to participate in an exhibition centred on freedom fighter Rani Gaidinliu and the museum's Gaidinliu Collection.

In a letter dated 14 August 2026, the Pitt Rivers Museum, the university's museum of world archaeology and anthropology, invited Kamei to Oxford for an event scheduled for 26th November 2026.

The invitation signed by Prof. Laura Van Broekhoven, cites Kamei's research on Gaidinliu, including his book Rani Gaidinliu: Legendary Freedom Fighter from the North East, as central to the museum's work on the collection.

The exhibition aims to highlight the Gaidinliu Collection and mark Gaidinliu's contribution to the Zeliangrong and wider Naga communities of the Northeast. During the visit, Kamei is expected to share his research, contribute expertise on Zeliangrong material culture, and take part in a round-table discussion with museum curators and academics on the collection's significance for Naga communities.

Kamei is an Indian Postal Service (IPoS) officer and currently serves as Planning Adviser at the North Eastern Council (NEC), Shillong. He is also an author and scholar whose work has focused on the history, culture and heritage of the Northeast, including his research on Rani Gaidinliu and the Zeliangrong community.
