Guwahati: Assam has 15,43,350 active job seekers on its books. The state government revealed these figures to the Legislative Assembly on July 13. Skill, Employment and Entrepreneurship Minister Prasanta Phukan confirmed the data covers registrations through June 30, 2026.

Joblessness remains a heavy burden. The ministry reported 3,55,741 fresh registrations in the first half of 2026 alone. This follows years of volatile enrollment numbers since the department began maintaining annual records. Records show 15,82,987 job seekers were registered on March 31, 2016.

Fluctuations define the recent registry history. Registrations hit 11,53,971 in 2022 with 10,34,613 new entries, then jumped to 20,10,517 in 2023 with 8,56,546 fresh additions. The count climbed to 21,16,561 in 2024 but added only 1,06,044 new names. By 2025, the active list dropped to 11,88,160 despite 2,49,765 new sign-ups. Officials noted that 12,52,731 registrations had lapsed as of June 30, 2026.

Degrees do not guarantee work. Graduates represent the largest pool of applicants, totaling 6,48,899 registrations. Postgraduates add another 1,16,159 to the list. The registry also tracks highly skilled labor: 62,581 technical diploma holders and 65,989 technical graduates remain out of work. The minister stated these figures demonstrate "a significant number of qualified youth seeking employment in the state."
