Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced the successful release of 15 pygmy hogs into the wild at Manas National Park. This initiative is part of the ongoing Pygmy Hog Conservation Programme aimed at restoring the state's grassland ecosystems and protecting a species often cited as the smallest and rarest wild pig in the world.
Sarma highlighted the event as a major step forward for local wildlife conservation efforts. Sharing the news on social media, he stated, "A dash to freedom. The release of 15 pygmy hogs into the wild at Manas National Park under the Pygmy Hog Conservation Programme marks another milestone in our efforts to restore fragile grassland ecosystems and protect one of the world's rarest wild pig."
The conservation programme focuses on breeding and reintroducing these animals into their natural habitats to ensure long-term survival. Manas National Park has become a central hub for these recovery efforts, where experts work to rebuild populations while simultaneously rehabilitating the grasslands. The project serves as a key example of Assam's broader commitment to scientific wildlife management and biodiversity protection.
