Guwahati: Assam plans to crack the top 10 list for tourist arrivals in India. Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah laid out the roadmap in the 2026-27 Budget on Thursday. The state currently draws 76 lakh domestic visitors annually, holding its spot as the primary tourism market in the Northeast.
The government will roll out a Homestay Policy to keep that momentum climbing. Qualifying homestays receive a 30 per cent capital subsidy and 2 per cent interest support. They also get digital help and marketing muscle to show off local culture. Business is the goal.
Big money is moving into the hotel sector too. New five-star properties will rise in Umrangso, Haflong, and Manas. Investors in these projects get State GST reimbursements and extra capital aid. Baruah noted, "A key target of the plan is to place Assam among the top 10 Indian states for tourist arrivals."
International travel advisories from Japan, Australia, and the European Union have eased up recently. This signal proves global confidence in the state is growing. Better air links to Dubai and Abu Dhabi will add to existing routes serving Thailand, Singapore, and Bhutan. State officials expect these flights to drive tourism and attract fresh private investment.
