Guwahati: Assam is establishing itself as a primary destination for global investment as India expands its engagement with the East. Ministry of External Affairs Secretary Sibi George emphasized the state's central role during a visit from a high-level European Union delegation to Guwahati on June 8 and 9.

George noted the evolution of India's foreign policy from the earlier Look East model to the current Act East Policy. He stated, "Assam offers something unique to the country, and that is generating a lot of interest among companies to come here."

The EU delegation, led by Ambassador Herve Delphin, arrived to investigate potential cooperation across the eight Northeastern states. Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma met with the group to discuss strengthening trade relations and expanding commercial partnerships between European markets and the region.

Sarma pointed to the state's economic performance as a key incentive for potential partners. He highlighted that the state is currently outpacing the national economic growth rate and expects that momentum to increase significantly over the next five years. Officials view this diplomatic visit as a major step toward using Assam as a gateway for connectivity and trade development in Northeast India.
