Guwahati: Assam will hire over 33,000 workers to overhaul its medical system. Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah laid out the plan in the 2026-27 budget on Friday. The state wants an MBBS doctor at every single health sub-centre. It is a bold move. Baruah claimed the initiative would strengthen primary healthcare and said, "The initiative would strengthen primary healthcare delivery across the state and become the first such programme in the country."
The state will add 33,240 new posts to its payroll. This includes 6,814 MBBS doctors, 10,942 staff nurses, and thousands of pharmacists and lab technicians. Other roles range from dental surgeons to accounts staff and dressers. The government wants better medical access for everyone, from tiny clinics to big hospitals.
Assam is also expanding its higher education reach. Officials will build four new medical colleges in Goalpara, Hailakandi, Hojai, and Bajali. The state already runs 14 colleges. Another 10 remain under construction. These new additions will bring the total count to 28 across the region.
