Guwahati: Bharat Bora turned his backyard into a hospital for birds. For 28 years, the Teporchali Bam resident has scouted the woods of Assam to find injured wildlife. He picks them up, pays for their medical bills, and keeps them safe until they can fly again.
He has treated over one hundred birds since he started. Owls and hornbills are his primary patients. His work caught the eye of the Khowang Regional Forest Office, which now hands him injured creatures for care. Right now, he is looking after two hornbills brought in by state officials.
Bora gets help from local youths to protect the habitat. Visitors from across the globe now travel to this spot to watch his work. "Teporchali Bam village has gradually become known as the Hornbill Village," said reports documenting the community effort. This village stands as a win for wildlife in Northeast India.
