Guwahati: Assam is building a series of satellite townships around Guwahati. The state government wants to cut down on city congestion. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma says this shift will guide the capital through its next phase of growth.

A new body, the Guwahati Satellite City Development Authority, will manage the project. They are tasked with sorting out finances, drafting blueprints, and steering development for these new urban centers. The plan targets residential zones, industrial corridors, and logistics hubs.

Sarma shared his vision on social media. "The satellite townships are intended to accommodate the city’s expanding population and rising economic activity while reducing congestion in the state capital and improving living conditions," he stated. The government expects these zones to pull development pressure away from the crowded core.

Guwahati faces massive strain from a ballooning population and gridlock. Officials have already poured money into flyovers and road widening to keep the city moving. Now, they want to spread the load to nearby areas. The authority will coordinate with various government agencies to draw a roadmap for this expansion. They aim to keep Guwahati the primary business hub for the Northeast while making room for future growth.
