Guwahati: The Assam government launched a new transport and escort service on June 10 to help students living in tea garden communities attend classes. Officials designed the program to overcome geographical barriers and last-mile connectivity issues that often prevent children from reaching their classrooms.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized the impact of the project on local youth. "This is a very important initiative we’ve undertaken for our children in tea garden areas. The transport/escort facility for the students will ensure that they have no hindrance in pursuing their studies," Sarma wrote in a post on X.

Managed by Samagra Shiksha Assam, the scheme provides free transport or escort support to students from Class I through Class X. Education Minister Ranoj Pegu noted that the program aims to remove transportation obstacles for children from marginalized backgrounds. Local School Management Committees will oversee the daily transport arrangements.

The initiative covers 9,714 students across 198 schools in 11 districts. Funding includes financial assistance of Rs 5,400 per student for the duration of the program, which runs from June 10, 2026, through March 31, 2027, with the exception of July 2026.
