Guwahati: Experts gathered at Assam Agricultural University in Jorhat on Monday. They kicked off a four-day national summit focused on sustainable agriculture through plant biotechnology. The event marks the second anniversary of the BioE3 Policy. It will run until October 1. Organizers include the DBT-North East Centre for Agricultural Biotechnology and the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology.
The inaugural session started at 3.30 pm inside the Dr MC Das Memorial Auditorium. Dr Bidyut Kumar Sarmah opened the event. He set a clear goal: he wants to "strengthen plant biotechnology research, education, capacity building and technology translation in the Northeast." Other speakers included Dr Suraksha S Diwan from New Delhi and Dr Purnima Sharma of the Biotech Consortium India Limited. Regional officials like Shri Satinder Kumar Bhalla of the North Eastern Council also attended to discuss development initiatives.
Dr Kamal Malla Bujarbaruah, Dr Ashok Kumar Singh, and University Vice Chancellor Dr Dipjyoti Rajkhowa participated as well. The summit aims to move science from the lab to the field. Panels will tackle biosafety, policy frameworks, and how to get technology into the hands of farmers. Industry veterans like Dr Tilak Raj Sharma and Dr Mohd Aslam are among the attendees. International experts Dr Deepak Pental and Dr Thomas J Higgins joined the conversation online.
Young researchers get their turn too. Students will present their own work during poster competitions. Dr Madhumita Barooah delivered the closing vote of thanks. The gathering provides a direct link between senior scientists and the next generation of agriculture professionals.
