Guwahati: The Assam government plans to restart a dormant raw material bank in Hajo. Industries Minister Bimal Bora confirmed the move during Monday’s Legislative Assembly session. The facility previously operated with Rs 75 lakh in combined state and central funding before falling into disrepair. Officials hope the revival will help local artisans struggling with soaring production costs and a dwindling workforce.
MLA Prakash Chandra Das pushed the government for answers on the industry's future. The sector creates traditional utensils and religious items but faces stiff competition from modern goods. Minister Bora noted that while the government wants to help, current budget plans exclude a new design and training centre. He admitted, "The government has been continuously assessing the condition of the traditional craft sector and will take necessary steps to support its growth."
State support currently flows through the Common Facility Centre and the Cluster Management Committee. Artisans can also access aid via the Micro and Small Enterprises-Cluster Development Programme. Further funding remains available through the PM Vishwakarma Scheme, the Chief Minister’s Atmanirbhar Assam Abhiyan, and the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme.
Producers eyeing a Geographical Indication tag face specific hurdles. The government maintains that a recognized association or society must formally apply to the Registrar of Geographical Indications to secure the status. Producers must lead that charge themselves.
