Assam Government Appoints Sushanta Biswa Sarma as Barpeta Police Chief

Guwahati: The Assam government shifted a key officer today. Sushanta Biswa Sarma, the younger brother of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, now serves as the Senior Superintendent of Police for Barpeta. A formal notification from the Home Department confirmed the move.

Sarma is a veteran 2002-batch Assam Police Service officer. He previously held the post of Senior Superintendent of Police in the CID wing, specifically focusing on crimes against women and children. He will officially take over the Barpeta office once he assumes charge.

The transfer stems from the departure of IPS officer Pushkin Jain. Jain left the state force for central deputation with the Central Bureau of Investigation in New Delhi. The department needed to fill the resulting gap in command.

Marylyn Zawlsangmawi steps into the vacant CID role. She is a 2010-batch APS officer who previously served as the Additional Superintendent of Police at Bongaigaon headquarters. She is now the Senior Superintendent of Police, in-charge, for the CID division. The government noted the personnel change, stating, "His new posting as Senior Superintendent of Police, Barpeta, will take effect from the date he assumes charge."
