Guwahati: Bhargav Kumar Bhagawati just picked up a major award. The ICAR-Central Institute of Freshwater Aquaculture honored the Assam entrepreneur during the 26th National Fish Farmers’ Day. They recognized his push for scientific fish farming and his role in building a sustainable rural business.
Bhagawati walked away from a corporate job in 2013. He took the reins at his family business, Pabhoi Fish Farm. He turned that site into a powerhouse for seed production and a training hub for the entire Northeast. He mentored thousands. More than 10,000 youths have passed through his hands-on training programs.
The farm churns out quality Indian Major Carp seed. They also breed high-value species like Pabda, Gulsha, and Chital. These products now reach farmers across the country. It is a big win for the state. Assam wants more local production to cut down on expensive imports.
He teamed up with top-tier groups like the ICAR-Directorate of Coldwater Fisheries Research and the College of Fisheries in Raha. He credits his father, Biren Bhagawati, for the start. Regarding the work, Bhagawati said, "Bhagawati credited the success of the enterprise to the foundation laid by his father, Biren Bhagawati, a veteran fish farmer from Assam who has mentored thousands of aspiring fish farmers over the years."
