Guwahati: The Tinsukia district administration has launched emergency containment measures following the detection of African Swine Fever in Ouguri village. District Commissioner Sumit Sattawan declared the village an epicentre under the Disaster Management Act, prompting a mandated culling of pigs within a one-kilometre infected zone. This operation is scheduled to conclude on June 11, overseen by the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department.
Authorities have implemented a 30-day ban on the sale, transport, and trade of pork products throughout the Doomdooma Co-District. All local pork shops are required to remain closed, and the movement of livestock to neighbouring districts or Arunachal Pradesh is strictly prohibited until further notice. Officials emphasize that while the virus is devastating to swine populations and the local economy, it does not threaten human health.
The administration has placed the area within a 10-kilometre radius of the epicentre under active surveillance. Residents are advised to avoid panic and follow official protocols, as authorities warned that those who violate these restrictions "will face legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS)." Citizens seeking assistance or further information can reach the Animal Husbandry Department helpline at 1962 or the District Control Room at 0374-2331000.
