Assam Council Officially Renames to Dima Hasao

Guwahati: The North Cachar Hills Autonomous Council is officially dead. It is now the Dima Hasao Autonomous Council. An official communique from the Principal Secretary at the Council Secretariat in Haflong confirmed the change this past Monday.

This directive mandates that all departments adopt the new name for every official document, including letters, files, notices, and orders. Even physical hardware like seals and signboards must show the new title. The council relies on a formal notification issued on May 18, 2026, to enforce this rebranding. Officials claim the shift serves to create uniformity across all council offices. They want the name to match everywhere.

The council holds sway over the entirety of the Dima Hasao district located in central-southern Assam. Its headquarters remain in Haflong, a town situated roughly 330 km away from Guwahati. The region is famous for its geography. Haflong is the only hill station in Assam and is popularly known as the "Scotland of Assam."
