Guwahati: Wildlife biologist Purnima Devi Barman has been named a recipient of the 2026 Wayfinder Award by the National Geographic Society and Kia. The Assam-based conservationist gained international acclaim for her leadership of the Hargila Army, a grassroots movement comprising over 20,000 women. This group focuses on habitat protection, environmental education, and sustainable livelihoods for the greater adjutant stork, a bird locally known as the hargila.

The National Geographic Society announced 15 recipients from six continents on June 9. These individuals were honored for their contributions to science, conservation, and storytelling. Alex Moen, the Society’s Chief Explorer Engagement Officer, noted that these leaders are united by a deep commitment to the planet, stating, “Though their work spans fields as diverse as continental rifting and wildlife safety on highways and railways, these visionary leaders are united by boundless curiosity and an active commitment to inspiring people to care about the world around them.”

Barman dedicated this career milestone to the memory of her late father, Subedar Major Bhabani Kanta Sarma. Her recognition highlights the success of community-led environmental efforts in India and places her among a diverse group of global experts. Other honorees include researchers from countries such as Haiti, China, Australia, Malaysia, and Brazil, all supported by Kia through its Accelerate the Good program.
