Assam Clerk Caught on Video Demanding Bribes for Pensions

Guwahati: A junior assistant at the Athani Block Development Office in Bilasipara is facing backlash for allegedly shaking down elderly citizens. Abdul Hakim Chowdhury works in the Dhubri district. A viral video now circulating on social media shows the employee taking cash from a person seeking old-age pension benefits.

The footage sparked immediate outrage. The Dhubri unit of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti issued a stern ultimatum to local officials. They want Chowdhury fired and jailed. The organization claims these bribes target vulnerable people who rely on government welfare to survive.

Protests loom if the office stalls. The group stated: "The organisation alleged that such practices were causing hardship to people seeking government welfare benefits and called for action against the official." Members intend to gherao the Block Development Officer's office to force a response.

The accusations remain unverified for now. It is unclear if higher authorities have started a formal inquiry into the clerk or the video evidence.
