Guwahati: Assam is betting big on Guwahati infrastructure. Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah laid out a 2,500 crore plan to move overhead power lines underground, aiming to boost city safety and clean up the streets. The state assembly heard the budget proposal on July 10.

Work starts in phases. The government set aside 200 crore for the first stage under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme. Crews will bury lines across five key stretches, including Paltan Bazar Square, MG Road, and parts of GS Road. This shift will make the city power grid more resilient.

The state also wants a metro system. Baruah said the government will study whether the upcoming 121-km Guwahati Ring Road can host a new rail corridor. "The proposed metro aims to decongest Guwahati city while promoting planned urban expansion around the satellite townships expected to develop along the ring road corridor."

The ring road itself is a massive undertaking. It includes a 55-km northern bypass, a bridge over the Brahmaputra, and six-laning the existing NH-27. Officials expect these moves to fix the city traffic nightmare and connect the region.
