Guwahati: Police in Sadiya caught two men with 22 dead parrots and an airgun on Saturday. Officers intercepted the suspects at Chapakhowa Chariali late on August 4. The pair allegedly moved the birds toward Roing, Arunachal Pradesh, when police stopped their transport.
Authorities identified the men as 24-year-old Kul Bahadur Pradhan from Magar Basti, Sadiya, and 42-year-old Larjipong Dulong, an India Reserve Battalion personnel from Arunachal Pradesh. Evidence suggests the birds were hunted near the Kundil River. Police handed both men and the seized items to the Forest Department on Saturday morning.
Sadiya Regional Forest Officer Lucky Dutta confirmed the handover and noted that the department is processing the case under the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972. "Necessary action is being taken as per the applicable provisions of law. We appeal to everyone to stay away from hunting, killing or possessing wild birds and other wildlife. If anyone comes across such activities, they should immediately inform the Forest Department," Dutta stated.
Investigators now work to identify the specific bird species and determine the exact site of the killings. The Doomdooma Forest Division remains under scrutiny as officials probe whether other individuals played a role in the incident.
