Guwahati: Assam Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah presented the 2026-27 State Budget on Friday. He promised a massive push for jobs and infrastructure. The government plans to create over two lakh positions in the next five years. A special task force will oversee the hiring process.
Infrastructure gets a Rs 10,000 crore boost. This includes Rs 4,954 crore set aside for the Guwahati Ring Road Project. The state will also build an Aerotropolis near the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport to lure investment. The Guwahati Satellite City Development Authority will lead the work.
Welfare spending hits Rs 6,000 crore. Pregnant women in tea gardens get Rs 15,000 in assistance. Nearly 5.3 lakh students will benefit from the Mukhyamantri Nijut Moina Scheme starting in October. Farmers gain too. Small farmers receive Rs 11,000 for equipment, while paddy and wheat producers get extra cash over the Minimum Support Price.
The administration is cracking down on personnel. Baruah stated, "any government employee found guilty of practising polygamy would be dismissed from service."
Economic indicators show growth. Per capita income climbed to Rs 1,85,429. The state also continues its flagship Orunodoi and Jibon Prerana programs. Officials aim to lift own-source revenue to 50 per cent of the total.
