Assam AIUDF Reaffirms Opposition to Proposed Uniform Civil Code

Guwahati: The All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) has officially renewed its opposition to the Uniform Civil Code, arguing the proposed legislation is inherently discriminatory. Party leader Rafiqul Islam stated that the AIUDF views the move as an attempt to impose the laws of other communities onto Muslims, potentially undermining their cultural and religious identity.

Islam emphasized that the party leadership, including its president, remains committed to resisting the bill. "We have opposed the UCC in the past, and we oppose it today as well. Our party president has also opposed it," Islam said. He further characterized the proposal as a black law rather than a genuine effort to establish legal uniformity across the country.

The AIUDF leader raised concerns regarding exemptions granted to tribal communities under the current framework. He questioned why the government would offer such protections to tribal groups while reportedly excluding Muslims, suggesting that the existence of any exemptions undermines the supposed universal nature of the law. The party continues to urge that any legislative changes must respect constitutional safeguards and the concerns of minority communities.
