Itanagar: Glaw Lake in Arunachal Pradesh is officially India's 101st Ramsar site. This is a first for the state. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav confirmed the news on Monday. The recognition brings international protection to this Eastern Himalayan freshwater ecosystem.
The lake sits inside the Kamlang Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary in Lohit district. Mountain streams feed the water. Thick forest surrounds the site. The area holds massive biological value, hosting over 150 tree species and 49 types of orchids.
Yadav touted the growth of the national network. "From 26 Ramsar Sites in 2014 to 101 today, this remarkable journey reflects our unwavering commitment to environmental protection, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development," he posted on X. The designation falls under the 1971 Ramsar Convention treaty. This international pact forces countries to establish strict management frameworks for their protected wetlands.
Officials expect the status to boost local conservation work. It will safeguard water security and climate resilience. The government also aims to support sustainable livelihoods and research through this new classification. This move places Arunachal Pradesh firmly on the global map for wetland management.
