Itanagar: Glaw Lake has officially become India’s 101st Ramsar site. This freshwater body in Arunachal Pradesh marks the state’s first entry into the global conservation network. Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav announced the designation this past Monday.
The lake sits in the Eastern Himalayas inside the Kamlang Tiger Reserve and Wildlife Sanctuary. It is located in the Lohit district. Mountain streams feed the water. Dense vegetation surrounds the site.
Surveys count over 150 tree species and 49 types of orchids. These plants thrive in the wetland and its surrounding catchment area. This high biodiversity earned it the international status.
The Ramsar Convention began in 1971. It protects wetlands worldwide. Yadav noted the rapid growth of India's network under Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He stated, "From 26 Ramsar Sites in 2014 to 101 today, this remarkable journey reflects our unwavering commitment to environmental protection, biodiversity conservation and sustainable development."
Chief Minister Pema Khandu expressed support for the decision. He believes the status will boost conservation and local livelihoods. The designation aims to provide water security and climate resilience for the region. Officials now plan to establish management frameworks for the area. This ensures long-term protection of the ecosystem.
