Itanagar: Police arrested a multi-tasking staffer at the Tawang Post Office in Arunachal Pradesh on September 14. She stands accused of embezzling 39.25 lakh rupees in government funds. Tawang Superintendent of Police Tasi Darang confirmed the arrest following a formal complaint from the postal department.
Financial checks at the office on September 7 first exposed the massive discrepancies. Inspector of Post Office H Nilamai Singh filed a written complaint on September 13. He claimed the woman failed to account for the total sum by September 10. The missing money included 34.49 lakh rupees in Postal Life Insurance and Rural Postal Life Insurance premiums collected between January 1, 2023, and May 31, 2024. That cash never made it into official accounts despite repeated reminders.
The department also discovered another 4.75 lakh rupees in counter cash went missing. Officials confronted the staffer early on. She admitted to the shortage and provided a written statement. According to the complaint, she submitted a "written undertaking acknowledging the alleged misappropriation of public funds."
Officer-in-Charge N Angu is now handling the case at the Tawang Police Station. The suspect is currently in police custody. Investigators are still working to track the missing cash and determine the full extent of the financial irregularities.
