Guwahati: Armyworms are tearing through 435 hectares of paddy fields in Sivasagar. The infestation strikes just as farmers attempt to recover from recent floods. It is a double blow. Agricultural officials confirmed the pest has spread across Nitaipukhuri, Maharani, Namti Pathar, and Jerenga Pathar. Reports of damage also arrived from Amguri, Nazira, and Dhupabor.
The district Agriculture Department is scrambling to contain the spread. They are handing out pesticides to farmers based on localized needs. The goal is to stop the pests before more crops rot. They are currently using drones to spray chemicals over the hardest hit fields. Officials hope this aerial method covers more ground in less time. The department remains focused on limiting further destruction to the paddy harvest.
