Kohima: The All Nagaland College Students' Union (ANCSU) has issued a stern ultimatum to the Nagaland government, demanding progress on the construction of a proposed girls' hostel at Kohima Science College. During a press conference in Kohima, union president Kivika Yeptho stated that the state must address the project's stagnation within one week or face an organized agitation.
The project, initially proposed in 2022 through the Investment and Development Authority of Nagaland (IDAN) and approved in 2023, received an initial sanction of Rs 3.53 crore from REC Limited under its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative. The student body noted that an initial installment of Rs 1.5 crore was released in April 2023. However, construction has yet to commence, as authorities reportedly sought to upgrade the facility to international standards, which pushed the estimated cost to Rs 6 crore.
ANCSU leaders expressed frustration that the funds have remained unutilized for three years, leading REC Limited to initiate proceedings for a refund due to the expiration of the project timeline. The union has criticized the government for a lack of transparency, noting that no formal blueprints or updated facility plans have been presented to the student body. With female students currently struggling to manage with a single 100-bed hostel, the union insists that the government must immediately begin construction to resolve the housing shortage and prevent the loss of the sanctioned grant.
