Agartala Court Jails Drug Trafficker for Eight Years

Agartala: A special court in West Tripura sentenced Suman Das to eight years of rigorous imprisonment for drug trafficking. Special Judge Ashutosh Pandey delivered the verdict on Saturday, July 18, 2026. The court convicted the 27-year-old under Sections 22(b), 25, and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

Police caught him. On November 22, 2021, officers from the Battala Outpost intercepted Das at the Howrah Market in the Battala area of Agartala. He was riding a scooty at the time. A search yielded 350 Yaba tablets weighing 31 grams and 9 grams of heroin. Sub-Inspector Chinmoy Bhowmik investigated the case and filed the chargesheet on January 16, 2026.

The trial saw the prosecution examine 12 witnesses. This included the investigating officer, Deputy Director of the Chemical Examiner's Division Suman Kumar Chakraborty, and Judicial Magistrate First Class Swastika Das. Special Public Prosecutor Biswajit Deb handled the state's case. The court also ordered Das to pay a fine of Rs 30,000. He faces an additional month of simple imprisonment if he fails to pay.

The court records note the matter as SPL (NDPS) Case No. 24/2026. This originated from West Agartala Police Station Case No. 130/2025. Following the sentencing, the judge remarked on the evidence presented throughout the trial.
