Shillong: Women lawyers from the High Court of Meghalaya Bar Association and the Shillong Bar Association want Advocate General Amit Kumar gone. They met Cabinet ministers Tuesday to deliver a formal memorandum. The group demands an independent inquiry into how state panel advocates get their jobs. They claim the hiring process favors those with ties to the Advocate General’s own office.
This pressure campaign follows a meeting with Governor C.H. Vijayashankar at Lok Bhavan last Saturday. The lawyers handed a copy of their grievance to Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira. They dropped off identical documents at the offices of other ministers they missed. The core dispute involves comments Kumar made about the safety and harassment of women in the local legal community.
The advocates deny any widespread mistreatment. They argue men and women in the profession work as equals. The women insist they are independent and do not want special treatment based on gender. They challenged the necessity of bringing in an Advocate General from outside the state when local talent is available. They remain open to investigating real misconduct but reject baseless claims. The lawyers officially called the AG's comments “un-particularised, unverified, or generalised” allegations against the Bar.
