Shillong: The West Bengal government has downgraded the security cover for former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly. Officials confirmed on Wednesday that the former BCCI president and current Cricket Association of Bengal chief will move from Z-category protection to Y-category status.
The previous Z-category security detail included approximately 35 personnel and a pilot vehicle. The new Y-category arrangement consists of three to four officers, including two armed security guards tasked with close protection.
This change is part of an ongoing state-led review aimed at reallocating security resources based on current threat assessments. Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari ordered the audit after taking office to ensure that enhanced protection is reserved for individuals with genuine risks. The administration is systematically evaluating public figures, politicians, and officials who were granted special security under the previous government.
Several other prominent figures, including Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and various former ministers, have already seen their security details adjusted through this initiative. Ganguly has not released a statement regarding the reduction of his protection detail.
