Uripok Apunba Lup Demands Probe Into Leimakhong Arson

Imphal: The Uripok Apunba Lup has demanded a federal probe into the burning of six Meitei homes at Leimakhong on July 11. The organization submitted formal requests to the Union Home Secretary and the Imphal West Superintendent of Police seeking arrests and compensation.

Kuki militants allegedly torched the structures in daylight. The site sits dangerously close to the Leimakhong Army Cantonment. This exposed massive security failures. Army and Central forces were on-site, yet the buildings still burned.

Displaced Meitei families have occupied relief camps since the ethnic violence erupted on May 3, 2023. The organization reports that villagers attempting to douse the flames faced physical obstruction and injuries. Central security forces allegedly blocked State Police from entering the area. Fire crews arrived only after the houses were destroyed.

The memorandum insists on an impartial inquiry into the security lapses. It calls for immediate rehabilitation for victims and the prosecution of the arsonists. The group stated, "The incident exposed serious security lapses despite the presence of Army personnel and Central security forces."

A separate complaint to the Imphal West police requests a time-bound investigation and an FIR. The organization wants guarantees that security measures will improve to stop future attacks and allow displaced residents to return home safely.
