Shillong: Union Minister of State for Steel and Heavy Industries Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma visited Meghalaya’s South West Khasi Hills district on Wednesday to evaluate the status of central and state welfare initiatives. During a meeting in Mawkyrwat, the minister assessed the implementation of flagship programs, including the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Gramin, the Jal Jeevan Mission, and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

District officials briefed the minister on the logistical hurdles they face when delivering services to remote areas. Varma praised the administration for their commitment to these projects despite the significant infrastructural constraints present in the region. He urged the team to maintain their focus on local development.

The visit included several field activities, such as the distribution of Ayushman Bharat cards to 20 beneficiaries at the local Civil Hospital. Varma also checked on natural farming initiatives supported by the National Rural Livelihood Mission in Wahsiej and handed over keys to a new PMAY-G housing recipient. His itinerary featured a stop at an Anganwadi center in Mawlangwir, a tree plantation event in Mawpon, and a tour of the Mawranglang Viewpoint.

The minister was joined throughout the day by key district leadership, including Deputy Commissioner Aitinolin L Mawlong and Superintendent of Police B Jyrwa.
