Shillong: CMJ University students finally have a way to earn valid degrees. The University Grants Commission cleared the path following a December 9, 2025, Supreme Court ruling. This decision came out of the commission's 598th meeting. The state government now holds the reins. Meghalaya officials will supervise exams for all diploma, undergraduate, and postgraduate programs.
Students can also transfer to other schools in the state. Admissions remain subject to local college rules and government mandates. Education Minister Rakkam A Sangma confirmed the receipt of the UGC letter. The state is hunting for an external agency to run the testing process. “Our primary focus is to ensure that the academic future of these students is no longer compromised. We will oversee the examination process to maintain strict standards of transparency,” Sangma said.
Not everyone is satisfied. Thousands of former students still hold degrees that lack recognition in the job market. The Khasi Students’ Union called the news a breakthrough for those currently enrolled. They demanded a clear plan for past graduates. The UGC sent a copy of this directive to the CMJ University Registrar. Future studies will be addressed after the initial exams wrap up.
