Guwahati: Sarat Das, a migrant laborer from the Sensowa village in Lakhimpur, died Thursday at a hospital in Tamil Nadu. He suffered fatal injuries at a tile-making factory three days prior to his death. His parents, Narayan and Jirumai Das, could not identify the specific location or name of the workplace. The worker died following medical treatment.
Tragedy hit again. A second migrant worker from Assam died just one day before Das. Diganta Dutta, a 33-year-old security guard from the Majuli district, perished on September 16 while riding a train home from Hyderabad. He fell ill during his travels. His body was discovered at Malda station in West Bengal. He leaves behind one child.
These deaths add to a grim string of accidents and disappearances involving laborers from Assam. Thousands flee their home state to work in industrial hubs across southern India. Many cite "limited livelihood opportunities at home" along with displacement caused by relentless floods and riverbank erosion as their primary reasons for leaving. Workers continue to face high risks while chasing stability outside their home borders.
