Shillong: Cabinet minister Marcuise N. Marak renamed the stretch from Walbakgre Junction to Holy Cross Hospital in Tura on Saturday. It is now Bishop George Mamalassery Road. The event marked the second anniversary of the bishop’s death.
The ceremony took place at St. Luke Church. Bishop Andrew R. Marak blessed a new bust and memorial plaque honoring the man who led the Diocese of Tura for 28 years. He helped thousands. Minister Marak praised the late leader for his work despite the challenges of the past. He said, "The late Bishop dedicated 28 years of exemplary service to the Diocese of Tura, leaving an indelible mark not only on the spiritual lives of the people but also in the fields of education, healthcare and social welfare."
The Bishop’s influence remains visible across the region. He helped start Holy Cross Hospital, several schools, and the Bakdil social service center. These institutions still serve the public today. Auxiliary Bishop Jose Chirackal also used the event to announce winners of the 2026 Bishop Mama’s Charitable Trust Scholarship. This trust continues his goal of helping students pay for their schooling.
Government officials and local priests attended the memorial. They celebrated his long history of service to the Garo Hills region. The day also recognized the sixth anniversary of Auxiliary Bishop Jose Chirackal’s ordination.
